The Hunger Game Series (The Hunger Games,Catching Fire, Mockingjay)
By Suzanne Collins
I read the third book in seven hours in a can't put this down frenzy. This series, popular among teenagers and adults is thought-provoking and suspenseful the entire way through. The basic plotline: It is set in the future in the country of Panem which consists a Capitol surrounded by twelve districts. There used to be a thirteenth district, but it was supposedly annihilated in a  rebellion of the districts against the Capitol seventy-five years ago. Since then the Capitol has opposed strict rules on the districts. As part of these rules and to show the people that they are powerless against the Capitol they hold the Hunger Games every year. Every child ages twelve to eighteen writes their name on a slip of paper and puts it in a glass ball. If you put your name in an additional time you get an extra ration of coal and oil, both necessities. Therefore, the poorer you are the more likely you are to put your name in multiple times. Then, during a festive ceremony, one boy and one girl are picked from each district (so twenty-four children in all. These 24 tributes are then brought to the Capitol, put on a kind of reality TV show with interviews and assessments. And then the twenty-four tributes are placed in a large arena controlled from the outside, and it's last man standing. And the arena can get too boring; it's the entertainment event of the year in the Capitol. My mother said the arena is like a video game. I agree. The protagonist, Katniss, is a naturally strong character crafted skillfully by Collins. It is through her eyes that we see the world. Gradually, Katniss learns that the arena isn't the only thing being controlled like a video game: she and everyone else are only chess pieces on a larger board. It would be incredibly easy for Collins to add as much gore as possible and make it a horror story, but she didn't. Do not be mistaken. This series is intense, especially in Mockingjay, and I would not recommend it for a light read or for younger readers. I have really enjoyed this series and it
has challenged me to question myself about the powers of media, morality, and the future of our world.
